Paris Flea Market

This past weekend one of my dear friends, my mom and I went to the Paris Flea Market which was held directly outside Fleuri’s boutique in Sacramento. It was a great time and we managed to get some great buys. My mom sells her bouquets in the shop. Lucky her….she made money just being there!

Instead of picking and choosing quotes myself, I’ve decided to let you my faithful blog readers do the talking. Tonight’s first “you pick the quote” post is my bloggy friend, Jamie of PineappleLuv. I got to know Jamie on my previous blog when I did a post on different things I want to accomplish in my life. I’ve always wanted to become a better swimmer, and would like to eventually learn how to surf. She’s been an inspiration to me, and has a wonderful blog that I frequent often.

Yay!!!! :)

Thank you to my bloggy friend Kate, at She’s Lump for this great award! I am so honored to be awarded this by her, as this is one of the first ones I head to in the morning. She always has me laughing, and inspires me!

The rules for Kreativ Blogger:
1.) Spell “Creative” in an unusual way so as to add mystery
2.) List 6 things you love.
3.) List 6 Bloggers who you pass the Kreativ Blogger Award on to.

Six Things I LOVE!

1) This weather we’re having in Northern California. It was 77 today. I wore a sleeveless dress and sandals. Doesn’t get much better than this!

2) “My life and those in it.” I love this quote. I have it as one of many facebook quotes.

3) Jim Halpert from The Office. I recently started watching this show, and I am in love.

4) Word Challenge on Facebook. I recently started playing and am pretty addicted.

5) Christmas decorations. We didn’t do Christmas for a few years….a few of you know why. I’m proud of my family and I for doing our best to forget the past so we can do what we do best….decorate for the holidays! It feels good to love my favorite holiday again 🙂

6) My blogger friends who are so kind and help me so much! You have all inspired me in many different ways. I know I’m only supposed to pick 6, but I am having problems doing so as I love all of your blogs so much. If this is illegal arrest me, as I would like to nominate everyone in my blog roll for this award! If your name is there, this to is yours. Thank you for all you’ve done for me!!!

Missed YOU!

Hello everyone, I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend. My apologies for not blogging as frequently and for not visiting your blog. Earlier in the week I was ill, and on Thursday my grandma went into the hospital. She’s doing much better, thank goodness. Needless to say, I’ve missed you all and hope that this week will run smoother than the last. I can’t wait to see all the goodies I’ve missed on your blogs, you all inspire me so much. By the way, I received my new camera this week, and I took some photos today. Since I’ve been such a bad blogger, I’ve decided to post three instead of my usual one. I hope I’m forgiven 🙂

Lucky Duck!

I am in awe with Lucky Duck Print Letter Press etsy shop . Their vintage Christmas card designs are absolutely gorgeous! You could say printing is in owner, Patrick Barrett’s blood seeing as his great-grandfather’s press business dates back to 1901. Barrett was kind enough to share the history of his families business as well as photos. Here is their story in his own words. Many thanks to him for being so kind!

“In 1901 my great-grandfather, Howard Deming, started the Sterling Press in the small city of Winsted, Connecticut. I’m not sure how long he operated solely as a job printer but it was at least until after he was married in 1907.

Howard Deming

Howard Deming

The story goes that he came home from the shop one day to find his wife in tears! The laundry had marked her shirtwaist with a pen (of some sort) and the ink had run and destroyed the garment. This gave old Howard an idea and he, allegedly, developed a “wash proof” ink and began to produce a line of name tapes (one’s name is printed on cotton tape) that could be sewn into garments thereby eliminating the need for the marking with a pen.

He found a rich market in institutions that had laundry service: hospitals, boarding schools, etc. He expanded and changed the company name to the Sterling Name Tape Company. His largest customers were summer camps for kids. In fact, if one went to camp in the U.S. and had name tapes made prior to around 1970, chances are they were Sterling Name Tapes!

He further expanded the business to include other personalized items for campers: towels, toilet kits, and the like. He also began to engrave names on pocket knives, scissors (for medical institutions), and all manner of things.

The Sterling Name Tape Company still exists today and is run by my father and brother. They don’t print letterpress any longer (which is why I was able to take a good portion of the old equipment for my own use) and have embraced more modern machinery. They do still sell name tapes though, among other things.

In 2001 (one hundred years after my great-grandfather opened his print shop) I brought some of his lead type and a hand press to Brooklyn and Lucky Duck Press was born! I now work primarily on his foot-powered 1889 Golding Pearl Old Style No. 3 and the 1905 Golding Official No. 9 hand press, creating note cards, wedding invitations, announcements, holiday cards, personal or business stationary, and other custom items.”

Gratitude

Thank you so much for all of your kind words. I am feeling a whole lot better, thanks to your well wishes 🙂 I don’t know if you watched Martha today, but Maya Angelou was on, and this was one of the many WONDERFUL things I picked up on.

Tuesday Afternoon

Hello everyone. I’m feeling a little under the weather today. As much as I’d love to check out all your fun blogs today, I think I’m going to have to put it off until tomorrow….unless I make a miraculous recovery today! Have a great one!!!

Paper & Ink Studio

As many of you know, I’m looking to open my photography shop soon. When I opened my first shop, I went into it without thinking, and have regretted that. This time around I’m more prepared, and going in with both eyes and ears open! I never ordered business cards for my knit goods, as I never saw anything that really caught my eye, and was in my price range. Well, that was until Saturday evening when stumbled on Paper & Ink Studio’s etsy page. This shop makes me wish I had a multitude of shops where I could order cards like they’re going out of style!!! The best part about their business cards is they’re double sided and you can change the colors if you so choose. It doesn’t get much better than this! I love them all, but have a design I’m leaning towards. Can you guess which ones they are?

Besides business cards, Paper & Ink Studio are right up our alley, as they offer chic stationery and beautiful invitations. This shop is too gorgeous to pass up!!!

Yes We Can!!!

While I’ve made it a point not to talk about the election on this blog and in the past on my previous one, I can hardly contain myself. I live in a very rural community, where people brag about racism, and tell my family you’re not that Mexican, look at the color of your skin. The night my grandma passed out a few years ago the fire chief asked us which hospital we wanted her transported to? When we said _____, he asked
“are you sure? They don’t have people of our kind and color there.” Had he actually read her chart he would have realized my grandmother’s surname is Perez. It’s a blessing he didn’t!!!

Another time I witnessed men sitting in the back of a pickup truck parked in front of an African American household, waving Confederate flags and one with a skeleton on it. I think thank god I’m of Hispanic descent, living in an area as beautiful can be, but filled with such ignorance. I’ve often wondered if I’d be like them if I didn’t have my culture, and my upbringing since the only common ground we have is our place of residence? But then I’m reminded of the person I am, my values and how I can’t bare to see anyone suffer. I feel just as bad for animals when they’re abused, as I do human beings being taken advantage of.

My mom and I never said anything about the fire chief, even though I desperately wanted to. If my grandmother didn’t live with us, and she wasn’t ill I would have done everything in my power to seek change. Most importantly I want to make sure my grandmother has adequate health care and would never jeopardize that. Her life and the lives of my loved ones mean more to me than life itself. The thought that my mother will have health care, if Barack’s Universal health care passes brings me great joy. The fact that he has inspired so many people makes me emotional.

I wanted an Obama sign in our yard but we were afraid of what people might say or do. About a month ago our neighbor posted a McCain sign in her yard. My mother and I looked at each other, and for the first time we weren’t fearful. I searched high and low on the internet, asked friends, and looked just about everywhere. If you might recall I mentioned in my Vintage Antique post that my best find was the sign I had been looking for. I’m thrilled to say it was this sign right below. I am so proud of my country, I’m so proud of my President!!! Thank you for the joy he has brought us, and the family values he holds so dear. I can think of a million reasons why I’m proud to call him my president, and those are the tip of the iceberg. God Bless America!!!!!!

Angora fire 2007. All houses around it were burned except this one.

Martin Luther King quoted this song during his “I Have A Dream” speech.

America My Country, ‘Tis OF Thee

By Samuel F. Smith, 1832

My country, ’tis of Thee,
Sweet Land of Liberty
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From every mountain side
Let Freedom ring.

My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills,
My heart with rapture thrills
Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet Freedom’s song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

Our fathers’ God to Thee,
Author of Liberty,
To thee we sing,
Long may our land be bright
With Freedom’s holy light,
Protect us by thy might
Great God, our King.

Our glorious Land to-day,
‘Neath Education’s sway,
Soars upward still.
Its hills of learning fair,
Whose bounties all may share,
behold them everywhere
On vale and hill!

Thy safeguard, Liberty,
The school shall ever be,
Our Nation’s pride!
No tyrant hand shall smite,
While with encircling might
All here are taught the Right
With Truth allied.

Beneath Heaven’s gracious will
The stars of progress still
Our course do sway;
In unity sublime
To broader heights we climb,
Triumphant over Time,
God speeds our way!

Grand birthright of our sires,
Our altars and our fires
Keep we still pure!
Our starry flag unfurled,
The hope of all the world,
In peace and light impearled,
God hold secure!

Flat & Buckled

Since seeing this cute photo of Jessica, Cash and baby Honor, I’ve taken a break from searching cameras and put my attention on finding her cute boots! Last year around Christmas I had my sights set on flat boots with buckles, but I was too late as the stores were gearing up for spring and summer wear. I will never understand shopping for summer when it’s freezing, and buying for winter when it’s above 100.

31!

I initially stated that I would post once a day for the month of October…which would mean that this would end tonight. I don’t know about you, but I am really liking these posts, so I’m going to keep at it!

Thank you to Chris of Reverieblog, and Cindy of Quaint Handmade for all of their generous camera help today. They truly are experts in their field!!! With all this camera talk I’ve decided I need to get a better photo printer as well. If anyone would like to offer their suggestions for a printer which prints professional quality photos, please comment or email me as I would greatly appreciate it!

Happy Pumpkin Day

I’m trying to be a good sport today, with the loss of the camera and all. To make matters worse when I went off to bed last night, I looked out my bedroom window and my trunk was open. Nobody opened the trunk, and there was storm water pouring in. I don’t know what I did yesterday into the whee morning, but my karma hasn’t been the greatest. Well, I guess things could be worse, because I normally DON’T look out my bedroom window at night. I hope my new car won’t smell like mildew when it dries.

Not A Happy Camper!

I’ve been trying to take pictures of the Canadian Honkers across the field (from my house) for the last week or so. These beautiful birds land there every fall. The photos I initially took turned out blurry, and I wasn’t sure if I’d ever get a clear shot. Last night they were closer than usual. I went into my neighbors field, and underneath the barbed wire fence to take a few photos. I was so happy with the way they turned out, clear as can be, with purple and orange sky behind them.

I didn’t give my camera another thought until tonight when my mom was cutting the most beautiful bouquets for a local shop, where she occasionally sells her mixed floral bouquets. I looked in the normal spot for my trusty powershot but it wasn’t there. We all searched high and low, while grandma panicked and repeatedly wanted to know what we were up to. I gave up as it was time to take the flowers figuring I’d find it when we got back.

About ten minutes ago I thought to go outside and try to retrace my steps once again.  I remembered that I had set a magazine on one of the chairs which had a few things that I was planning on showcasing on my blog next week.  A mean and evil light bulb went off when I decided to check if I had set my camera on top of it. Low and behold I found both!  Completely soaked. The camera will not even turn on. Where did all this rain come from? We weren’t expecting anything until the weekend!!!

I read The Secret and the authors tell you to think positive and not worry about things that could happen. This my friends is why I would worry on a daily basis, to make sure things like this never happen. I never fathomed my camera frying in a rain filled thunderstorm!

Whelp, this means I have to get a new camera. To those of you who know about my existing etsy shop, please tell your friends, family, coworkers, etc!!!! 🙂

Any tips on what my next camera should be?

Needless to say, I will be postponing the opening of my shop until I can take photos of my new merchandise.

How To Open An Etsy Shop

My current shop on etsy, has a name I don’t care for. It’s something I came up with on a whim and just went with it because I was eager to start selling. If I’d really thought about it I would have gone in another direction. Perhaps I would have named it “dolce” since that’s Candy in Italian. Who knows?

Now that I’m working on my photos (I started printing them last night!) I have thought about what I’d name it? I googled “etsy, store, name” and it brought me to the storque page on etsy. Storque is etsy’s version of a blog, and it’s a fantastic one I might add!

If you’re thinking of starting a new shop here are some fantastic tips directly from the storque!

  • “Choose a name that is easy to remember and spell.” For instance, I’ve thought about going with either my first name that I never go by- Candace, and my middle name, or Candace and my last name. I could do Candi and my mn or Candi and my ln. But than you’ve got the whole spelling issue. Funny story, I never spelled Candi that way until I started my internship at one of the local television stations in the sports department. I was talking to the guys about all the disturbing things people say about the name Candy, and they asked if I spelled it like an actual Candy? So I thought then and there that I’d change it. For the remainder of the internship, I was known as Candy with an i. With that being said, I have no idea what I should name it and what would be easy for people to remember. I could always spell it like Ashlee Simpson and put two ee’s at the end, and really be unique? Candee? Kandii? Candie? Hmmmmmmmmm! Continue reading

Lord Won’t You Buy Me A Mercedes Benz

While I’ve always been concious of making the right decision to not offend people and keep myself in line, I was never necessarily good at making the smart decision. At times I wanted something so bad that I was impatient and often regretted things I’ve bought.

I was wise in leasing my car a couple of years ago because I overpaid my mileage and got money in return this time around. I don’t know about you but the thought of hanging out with car sales people (whom I like to call vultures) who are trying to take my hard earned money makes me cringe. I was “robbed” over five years ago when I leased my jetta, thankfully I have gained courage and gotten wise since. I’ve heard on the news that now isn’t the right time to buy a car, but let me tell you it is. I had a 2007 Mercedes I leased, but because I live in a rural area, I drive a ton and had too much mileage. I would have liked to have kept it, but purchasing or releasing it would have been a waste. I was sad to let her go, but I got a terrific deal, which included a 100,000 mile warranty. Seeing as I am not a fan at all of the new Mercedes body style (sorry to offend anyone) I decided to stick with the same year. I leased my 2007 initially in August of 2006 and my new car was purchased in May of 2007. It’s a little bit younger and there are a few changes. Overall I love it! In the past I wouldn’t have cared about warranties, gap insurance and stuff like that, but after having an unpredictable vw which sucked my money and brought on anxiety, I feel smarter making decisions.

Is it selfish to hope my old car doesn’t sell? 😦

I Needed This

Last night, I was feeling sorry for myself over things that are beyond my control. I was lucky enough to have a good chat with my mom who put everything into perspective and not worry about people and things that I can’t change. I happened to hear this quote on David Letterman and it just stuck. It was exactly what I needed to hear…………………

Want Of The Day

Thanks to Apartment, Tbd, etc I have been looking on craiglist daily in hopes of finding a bamboo chippendale/hollywood regency chair for my bedroom. I have yet to find one, but found this gorgeous tufted chair! It’s $125, I would love to have it…but in this unpredictable economy I can’t fathom spending this at the moment. I figure I’d post this as if it was my inspiration board, and wish it my way instead (yes, I love The Secret.)

I’m working diligently, I mean my MOM is working diligently on fixing my vintage parlor. I bought the paint stripper to fix the top, and my poor Mama got tipsy from the fumes j/k! All that’s left is sanding it and painting it. I initially was going to paint it light pink, but that was before I purchased the new bed. It’s going to stay white, and will be converted into my desk, so I can get going on my new shop! 🙂

FYI~

For all you Sacramentan’s/Norcal folk my light pink vintage iron bed is now for sale. I paid over $300 for it less than 5 months ago, and am asking for the best offer. I have photos posted of it on my blog, and also on flickr. I’d be happy to email them to you!

I was tagged by my new buddy, Piper of Steak & Cakes, to list some of my favorite things. Her blog is fantastic….please check it out!

CLOTHING SHOP

As a recovering shop-a-holic, spend-a-holic, I don’t shop much anymore. I will state that once I start making money, I plan to shop at my home away from home during college (which is the reason I can’t shop anymore)

I can’t forget about Etsy, since I’ve learned so much from it since I started about 8 months ago. For those of you who don’t know, I’m working on opening up a shop very, very soon with my photos as note cards/post cards or for those of you who want to buy them as prints. Please stay tuned!!!

City:

The city I love the most hands down is Lake Tahoe…which is in both California and Nevada! This was my favorite place growing up. I realized at the young age of 10 that I wanted to be a reporter, thanks to all the practice of chasing down celebrities and conducting my own interviews! Each year my mom and I go to the celebrity golf tournament. Mostly to see Sir Charles, but mainly to have a good time! This year Tony Romo and Lucas Black threw me their golf balls! Needless to say I’m already counting down to next July!

Emerald Bay

Emerald Bay

I love Tony Romo, it's just a joke. I'd never mock him!Haha I love Tony, I wouldn’t mess with him!

Sweets

I tend to love sour things far more than anything sweet, but when I do have sweets I love turtles-chocolate with nuts. I am happy with a Hershey’s with Almonds! I love caramel covered marshmallows too!

Drink:

I like water, chamomile tea when I’m stressed, dr. pepper, and iced tea. Drinks with alcohol: bud light with limeade, margaritas, and a key lime martini from a restaurant called Centros in Sacramento.

MUSIC:

I love it all from classic country, to new country, oldies, rock, classic rock, hip hop, to elevator music. I love everything! A few favorites are

Sweet Caroline bam bam bam good times never felt so good, so good, so good...

Sweet Caroline bam bam bam good times never felt so good, so good, so good...

Keith Urban concert on my birthday!

TV

I don’t really watch tv. I turn on The Hills, but I can’t even get myself to be fully engaged in an episode. I don’t know what’s happening to me! If I watch tv it’s usually the news or if I know somebody I like is going to be on a program. Wait a sec I almost forgot, I’m really liking Kath and Kim and I watch The Soup.

Workout:

I’m thankful to have a fast metabolism, and I don’t work out.

Pastries:

Red velvet and fruit basket cake are my favorites!

Coffee:

Before I start please don’t think that I’m anal because of my drink. I have a weak stomach that can’t handle more than one espresso shot.

From Starbucks I get a tall caramel macchiatto with extra caramel and whipped cream in a venti cup. I used to have to say I’d like venti caramel macchiatto with a single shot, decaf, ex. caramel and whipped cream…but thanks to a nice guy at Starbucks recently I only have to say tall ” ” ” ” in a venti cup…and it saves me money 🙂

I have to tag two people but there are three lovely blogs I’d like to tag!

Tiffany of I Am Styleish

Melisa of The Lil Bee

and last but certainly not least

Karey of Mackin Ink

You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you.” ~ Brian Tracy

Yay Weekend!

I am so ready for the weekend even if it means spending it at the dealership 😦 My lease is up at the beginning of November, so I’m praying everything goes well. I know things could be worse, so I’ll gladly waste a few hours browsing cars. Hope you had a great Friday!

This week has been long and stressful. So I figured I’d quote my idol, since Sir Charles always puts things into perspective and me in a better mood!
